View Two: The Woman
1992-1994
Who is the woman? The woman on the container was named Mia. Mia was re-drawn on the Land-O-Lakes container by a Native American man in the late 1960s which was unique for the time. The artist wanted to incorporate many different tribes but many saw her as a stereotype of Native American robe. There is a difficult discourse between those who thought that she was depicting a stereotypical and misuse of Native American culture. On the other side was the Native American man who drew her that wanted to create pride in their culture as well as making Native Americans known in a time of silence.
