This is the first page of a treaty. It was signed by Andrew Jackson and is one of many that would make up those signed leading to the Trail of Tears. While many acts of removal would be put into place during Jackson’s successor’s term (Martin Van Buren), most were signed under Jackson. This treaty is between the Cherokee and the United States. The Cherokee notably had one of the worst removals of any tribe. Aspects of this treaty specifically go into more detail than most about the ‘logic’ used by the United States in removing Indigenous Tribes. New Echota being the capital of the Cherokee nation, and the Cherokee being one of the major removed tribes, this treaty is perhaps the most important of the time. While this is only the first page of the treaty, further analysis will focus on specific pages. |
