View Three-Fire
In native culture and in the wilderness in general, fire was the beginning of everything. It was useful to cook food and make sacrifices, along with many other uses. It seems here that the fire is being used for light for their painting but also providing light to the subject of the art, if they are indeed making art. From the perspective of the artist of the painting, the light from the fire provides a spotlight effect on the boys, as the boy’s faces are in shadows while their lower extremities are in the light. The shadow of the boys could provide a sense of protection over the people they are a part of. The smoke given off by the fire also was used as a communication device in this period.
