There is a promise of a physician, legal representative (an American one), a spending amount for each Native American family, and a promise of a “fair evaluation.” Jackson broke the ruling on the Supreme Court and knew he did not have a legal right and that even if he did removal would be immoral. The apprehension of Native Americans being noted proves that this is not fair and equitable, but often oppression was hidden behind a veneer of paternalism, whether or not people knew it was wrong. Jackson knew it was wrong, undoubtedly. His words written here are robotic, the cruelty to Native Americans seems almost mathematically calculated rather than thought of through an ethical lens. Jackson cares more about money than human rights. A tasteless and thoughtless focus on money was more horrifying when one considers the destruction of a livelihood for many human beings.
