View four: Pipe Stem
Also known as “Mii Sti”, this wooden pipe stem is thought to have been dyed by the same red ochre as the bag and has no decorations. The simplicity of the pipe may be attributed to having been wrapped with decorations for each ceremonial task rather than carved. A different reason though could be because it may have been the simple representation of the tree of life and the simpleness of new life. When connected with the bowl the entire pipe can symbolize the connection of the worlds above and below. The act of smoking holds the purpose of carrying thought, prayers, and other needs to and from the spirit world in order to reach the Creator.
