View three: Pipe Bowl

This is a pipe bowl made of unidentified brown stone. Most bowls made of the time were formed using stone or clay and were often used in trades to acquire whatever was necessary. Traditional Pipes and pipe bowls were used in a form of prayer or religious ceremony. These ceremonies ranged from ceremonial commitments to treaty signings, both of which would basically be spiritually binding. These bowls would often be packed with tobacco or nicotiana rustica when used by eastern tribes but would be stuffed with a variety of herbs, barks, and plants when used by western tribes. These herb, bark, and plant combinations would be used in preparation for something called a Kinnikinnick.
