First View - The Robe

Story Robes were used by people within the Blackfoot Confederacy to record important occurrences for tribes and individuals, and are described as “public records of personal achievement” (Blackfoot Digital). This buffalo hide robe was most likely intended for use in the warmer months, as it lacks the buffalo hair that would normally be left on if used as a winter robe (Galt).

It is not known whether this robe came from the Piikuni, Piikani, Siksika, or Kainai Nation, however, all four of these groups were close allies and all resided in the Northern Plains region, maintaining similar ways of life and sharing similar interests.
