Second View - The Story
The story robe seems to depict a central protagonist—the person wearing a saami, or Straight Up Headdress—performing a variety of interactions, including fighting with rivals and interacting with a woman (Blackfoot Crossing). According to Faust Gallery, the red used in this robe represents blood, war, and strength, and is very prevalent in the robe. Additionally, the yellow may represent a willingness to fight to the death and heroism, which helps to distinguish the protagonists’ rivals from their allies. The robe also includes horses, mainly used by the protagonist and their allies. Horses, or Po’no’komita, were an important part of life for people within the Blackfoot Confederacy, and were considered symbols of wealth and prosperity for their ability to travel and carry things quickly.
